Heidi’s journey began in 1998. Just as she is today, Heidi was a young woman with a sense of purpose and determination. She lived her life with enthusiasm and vision. As a Registered Dietitian and health & wellness specialist she was passionate about helping to affect positive change in people’s lives. At 38 she was in a happy relationship and loved her work. What more could anyone ask?
But pathways were being written that would soon challenge Heidi and all she had spent her career teaching others. Heidi knew something was wrong when after an exercise class one evening she discovered a lump in her left breast. “My intuition spoke to me and I knew I needed to have this lump looked at by my doctor.” The lump was malignant and in a split second, Heidi’s life, changed. Her well-planned path was suddenly not so clear. All that she cherished, her goals and her approach to living were challenged and threatened.
But Heidi had not climbed over obstacles before without learning something. “I was motivated by amazing and courageous people in my life, including both my parents, who had faced adversity. My mother had breast cancer and I watched her rise above it all and my father battled malignant melanoma. Though my father lost his battle in 1987 the spirit and grace with which he approached his cancer was remarkable to watch. It became part of the motivation for my own desire to face this challenge head on. I simply had to go forward and the spirit was in me to do so.”
Heidi was blessed with family and friends who rallied in support of her new life challenge. They provided motivation and inspiration for the good fight and after 2 surgeries, 4 cycles of chemotherapy and 7 weeks of radiation Heidi completed her full treatment regimen. Her healing however had only just begun…
As a cancer survivor Heidi has always been motivated to take the experience she lived and learn from it. “I always wondered how cancer would change me, or how I would live my life after a challenge like this. I know for me I needed to find the answer to a very important question, “what was the purpose of this journey?”
What happened was it opened up her spiritual life and awakened discoveries about herself and about what she really wanted from life. This tumultuous ride brought Heidi closer to the truths deep within her.
“I took a trip to the mountains which was a healing experience. I examined every aspect of my life and what it meant to me. It became clear that my true healing was just beginning and that I needed to continue with positive motion for my life. When I came home, I knew I wanted to marry Paul.” She proposed and he said yes, and two years after she finished her treatments, Heidi knew she wanted to have a child too. Since no one could give her a good enough reason why she shouldn’t get pregnant, Heidi moved ahead and at age 41, gave birth to her son McKinley.
Now with a lively six-year-old at home, Heidi has segued into a new career where she is combining her 20 years experience in public speaking and her life’s passion of reaching out to others with a message of hope and light.
Prayerfully and carefully Heidi has been busy connecting the dots and has realized that whether she is presenting a nutrition program, sharing stories of her unique discovery of faith or telling her story as a cancer survivor she continues her work of helping to affect positive change in peoples lives.
Her company, Life Inspired Speaking says it all. “I’m inspired by life and by people and their stories and I believe it is in telling our stories that we find a piece of healing,” says Heidi. “I listen to other people and am so awed by what they have to share and what we can teach each other. You know, I have always been moved by the Emily Dickinson quote, “To live is so startling it leaves little time for anything else.” I have that at my desk to remind me of the wonder of it all…A second chance and the opportunity to celebrate life and reach out to make a difference for others.”
